Grounds for establishment of town museum in Levice was private collection of postmaster of Vráble Jozef Nécsey who donated his extensive collection to town in 1927. Museum’s first seat was town hall, where the first exposition, so called Nécsey’s room, was opened. Collection of town’s museum was growing in the course of following years, stagnation and substantial damage were caused by the World War II. Museum was in 1958 moved to area of Levice Castle. The castle area, falling in disrepair, was in the second half of the 20th century used by various institutions and for various purposes and its look was changing accordingly.
Museum’s depositories were transferred to extant buildings from unsuitable premises of Franciscan monastery. Gradually all buildings passed under administration of Tekov Museum in Levice and at the end of 1980s started reconstruction of central, so called Captain’s, building. Nowadays there is located a permanent exposition, Gallery of Jozef Nécsey, one exhibition room, concert hall, directorate and offices of museum’s employees. In the area of southern bastion there is situated amphitheatre built in period between 2005 and 2006. It is a scene of various concerts and theatrical performances. Accessible for public in Dobó’s manor house is one exhibition room and also cultural-educational room, used mainly during events organized by museum.
Collecting locality of Tekov Museum in Levice is area of the district of Levice, nowadays rich collection fund from the field of natural sciences, archeology, history, etnography, numismatics and visual art is represented by more than 120 thousand pieces of collection items. Permanent exposition offers visitors overview of region’s history, from archeology, history of pharmacy, castle’s history, guilds and crafts, social life and folk clothes, it also presents famous photographies of native of Levice Ladislav Bielik from August 1968. Besides permanent exposition and temporary displays visitor can also visit various events organized by Tekov Museum in Levice as e.g. Night of Museums and Galleries, Week at the museum, Castle festival of Levice, puppet theatre, creative workshops ecc. The part of Tekov Museum in Levice are two extended expositions - Excavated dwellings in Brhlovce and Water mill Bohunice.
