History of vine growing and production of wine is reaching to Sumer and ancient Egyptians in the period almost 4.000 years before Christ where the vine came probably from Central Asia and the Caucasus. Reference of vine growing in territory of Slovakia is from the 7th up to 6th century before Christ. Noble varieties of vine were extended also thanks to Romans from which Slovak tribes took over the tradition of cultivating and producing wine. And the first written reference comes exactly from the territory of the Nitra Region. Nitra is mentioned as town rich in vineyards. Benedictine monks living in monastery of St. Hipollyte on Zobor mountain helped to develop wine production.
In the following centuries vineyards and wine form the territory of today’s Slovakia were popular among monarchs. Copious amount of wine was getting also on royal courts. And not only to Great Britain, on the table of Queen Elisabeth, but also to Louis XIV, whose proverbial quote „Vinum regis – rex vinorum“, what can be loosely translated as „The wine of kings – the king of wines“ gives Slovak wines a special flavour of worldwide reputation and hallmark of quality.
The biggest part of the Nitra Self-Governing Region is covered by Viticultural region of Nitra and Viticultural region of the Southern Slovakia, with interference on the west of Viticultural region of the Central Slovakia. Each region is divided into smaller parts - viticultural districts.
You can get to know wines of local wine-makers during numerous wine festivals, exhibitions, vintage festivals and celebrations of St. Urban, patron of wine-makers, but also directly in wine cellars, usually concentrated on touristically attractive wine routes. Wine festival of Strekov (Strekovský vínny festival), known also under name „Free viticultural republic“, is already for years one of the most frequented. It is a rare possibility to taste wines of top quality and to talk to famous producers, hear their opinions and ideas on wine, and this all in one place, in unique atmosphere of vineyards. You will meet people who are producing wine not only using their extraordinary viticultural art, but also using their heart.
Wine festival of Nitra (Nitriansky vínny festival) initiates visitors into the mysteries of wine production and gives them possibility to enter cellars that are only rarely visited by public. It offers wine tasting in almost 150 wine cellars. Unique with their atmosphere are old basement premises that were made accessible in Nitrianske podhradie.

Their great exposure and location predestine the vine to achieve top parametres for production of varietal wines as: St Laurent, Blaufränkisch, Riesling, Páľava, Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon. 30 ha of vines were planted and revitalized in 2008, when other varieties have joined the family as Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Moravian Muscat, Chardonnay and Alibernet. Nowadays company produces a wide range of varietal, kabinett and attributive wines awarded with several gold medals. Company has a residence in town of Vráble.

This exclusive wine brand is in the wine world synonym for the top quality. As the only wine in Slovakia it has got into Top 10 European wines list on the basis of evaluation by European sommeliers. You can taste Château Béla Riesling from famous winemaker Egon Müller in wine cellar from the 18th century, which is a pearl of the hotel complex.
Thanks to the southern orientation of vineyards and limestone-dolomite underlying rocks mainly burgundy varieties of vine are distinguished. Beside Burgundy Pinot noir and Burgundy Pinot blanc also Burgundy Pinot gris is doing well. This is used for production of the most famous wine Radošinský Klevner, that used to be supplied to English royal court and it has got a certificate. Radošinský Klevner had its resurgence in English royal family also during the last visit of Queen Elisabeth II in Slovakia. Wines from cellar Radošina are typical for unique character of scent and taste, they are popular among consumers, and they got more prestigious awards at worldwide exhibitions.

History of viticulture in this territory reaches to remote past, the oldest historical evidences of existence of viticulture and wine-making come from territory of Nitra. Also winery TERRA WYLAK continues this tradition by producing quality and varietal wines. Winery with pension is situated in quiet environment at 2.000 m from exit from R1 highway (exit Báb, direction Veľké Zálužie).
